Buying a Car

1

Check Vehicle History

Use CarJam to check the vehicle’s history, including previous ownership, odometer readings, and any outstanding finance.

2

Transfer Ownership at NZ Post

Bring your passport to any NZ Post branch and fill out form MR13B to register as the new owner.

Vehicle Requirements

WOF (Warrant of Fitness)
Safety inspection certificate ensuring your vehicle meets basic safety standards for driving on New Zealand roads.
REGO (Vehicle Registration)
Road tax for legally driving in NZ. You must have a valid WoF to renew your Rego.

Selling a Car

With NZ Driver's License
Complete the transfer online through the NZTA website.
Without NZ License
Visit NZ Post to fill out form MR13A, or call 0800 108 809.

Protect Yourself

Completing the Notice of Disposal after selling is crucial. This step protects you by ensuring you are no longer legally responsible for the vehicle. If the name isn’t changed, any subsequent fines or legal issues will still be sent to you.
